There are moments in history when the ground shifts beneath our feet so quietly that most people don’t feel it until much later. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 was one such moment. A small metal sphere beeping overhead changed how an entire nation thought about science, education, and its place in the world.
I believe we are living through another such moment right now — and this time, it’s happening in artificial intelligence.
As many of you know, I have spent the last few years pivoting my life in a direction I never imagined in my younger days. I am deep into studying Data Science and Analytics, and I am currently preparing for my CompTIA+ certification. Friends sometimes ask me: “Darpan, at this stage of your life, why go back to being a student?”
My answer is simple: because the world I see coming will belong to those who understand data and intelligence — human and artificial alike. And what has unfolded globally in recent weeks has only deepened that conviction.
Let me share what I’ve been observing, and why it matters to every single one of us.
The Best AI Model in the World Now Expires in Weeks
For years, we assumed the AI race was an American story — Silicon Valley labs, trillion-dollar valuations, and a comfortable lead over the rest of the world.
That assumption just collapsed.
A Chinese lab called Moonshot AI recently released Kimi K3 — a colossal model with 2.8 trillion parameters — and it went straight to the top of the global leaderboards. Not gradually. Overnight. Release by release, their models had been quietly climbing, closing the gap on the American giants. This time, they didn’t just close the gap. They jumped the fence.
But here is the statistic that stopped me in my tracks as a data science student:
Since mid-April, a new frontier AI model has arrived roughly every 10 days. A year ago, it was every 50 days. The year before that, every 60. Extend that curve, and we could see daily frontier releases within a couple of years.
Think about what that means. Frontier intelligence has become a perishable asset. The best model on Earth today has a shelf life shorter than the milk in your refrigerator. By the time a corporation finishes evaluating a model through committees and procurement cycles, it is already three generations behind.
For anyone building a career — or rebuilding one, as I am — the lesson is profound: don’t marry a tool; master the fundamentals. Standardize your skills and your architecture, not any single technology. The specific model expires. The understanding underneath it does not.
This is precisely why I chose to study data science at its roots — statistics, analytics, systems thinking — rather than simply learning the fashionable tool of the month.
The Embargo That Backfired
Here is where the story becomes a lesson in human resilience — something I write about often on this blog.
The United States placed export controls on advanced chips, intending to slow China’s AI progress. The Chinese labs were cut off from the best silicon on the planet. Kimi K3 was trained on chips two full generations behind the flagship hardware.
And what happened? Constraint became a teacher.
Cut off from raw computing power, Chinese researchers poured their genius into efficiency — squeezing extraordinary performance out of modest hardware through breakthroughs in quantization and optimization. Those breakthroughs are now permanent. They don’t disappear when policies change.
Growing up in India, I saw this spirit everywhere. We call it jugaad — the art of ingenious solutions born from scarcity. My grandmother could stretch a household budget in ways that would humble any Fortune 500 CFO. Scarcity, when met with determination, doesn’t produce weakness. It produces innovation.
The lesson for our personal lives is identical: the obstacles placed in your path can become the very foundation of your greatest strengths — if you choose to engineer around them rather than surrender to them.
Intelligence Too Cheap to Meter
Now consider the economics, because this is where my data science mind lights up.
The cost of AI intelligence is collapsing at breathtaking speed. Top-tier models that cost $60 per million tokens are being challenged by rivals at $15, and some at just $1 per million tokens. Researchers have recreated older landmark models at 1% of their original training cost. New compression techniques are pushing powerful models onto ordinary smartphones — GPT-class performance running in your pocket, on a few gigabytes of memory.
Within a short time, frontier-level intelligence may run on a laptop with 16GB of RAM. Every vehicle, every device, every home carrying persistent, private, on-device intelligence.
When you write the arithmetic down honestly, we are heading toward intelligence that is a million times cheaper and a million times more available than today.
Some people find this frightening. I find it electrifying. Because cheaper intelligence doesn’t shrink opportunity — it floods the world with demand we cannot yet imagine. When electricity became cheap, it didn’t destroy jobs; it created industries no one had dreamed of. The same will happen here.
And who will build, interpret, and guide this flood of intelligence? People who understand data. This is the future I am preparing for, one study session and one certification at a time.
The Machines Have Begun Improving Themselves
There is one more development that deserves quiet reflection: AI models have begun contributing to their own improvement — optimizing their own code, designing better chips and kernels, each gain compounding into the next.
This doesn’t require Einstein-level machine genius. It only requires a model making itself 10x faster — and a faster model turns out to be a smarter one, which then improves itself again. The curve is not flattening, as skeptics long predicted. It is accelerating.
For decades, we spoke of compound interest as the eighth wonder of the world. We are now watching compound intelligence — and it will reshape every profession, every economy, every life. Including yours. Including mine.
The Talent Lesson — One Close to My Heart
Here is a detail that resonates deeply with me as an Indian who has lived in the West for over three decades.
The founder of the lab behind Kimi K3 earned his PhD at Carnegie Mellon — one of America’s finest institutions. He was educated in the West, then returned home to build the very lab that shook the Western AI establishment.
Roughly 70% of the world’s elite AI researchers are not U.S. citizens — they are predominantly Chinese, Indian, Taiwanese, and British. For decades, the West’s great advantage was being the best place on Earth to build. That advantage is eroding, because opportunity is finally blooming everywhere.
As someone who left India with dreams in a suitcase, I feel this shift personally. Talent is universal. Opportunity, historically, was not. That is changing — and a world where a brilliant mind in Bangalore, Shanghai, Lagos, or Toronto has equal access to world-class intelligence tools is, to me, a more just world.

1. Become a lifelong student — again. I am preparing for my CompTIA+ exam not because it’s easy, but because relevance requires renewal. Whatever your field, add a layer of data literacy to it. It is the new reading and writing.
2. Master fundamentals, not fads. Tools expire in weeks now. Principles — statistics, logic, systems thinking, human psychology — compound for a lifetime.
3. Adopt the abundance mindset. Every attempt in history to fence in knowledge has failed. Intelligence is becoming abundant. Position yourself to ride the wave, not resist it.
4. Let constraints fuel you. If a nation can engineer around a chip embargo, you can engineer around your age, your background, your late start. I am living proof that it is never too late to pivot.
A Closing Thought
Sputnik didn’t end America. It ignited a fire that put humans on the Moon within twelve years. Competition, at its best, doesn’t diminish us — it awakens us.
The global AI race has begun in earnest, and it no longer belongs to any one nation. It belongs to everyone willing to learn, adapt, and build.
The question was never whether the world would change.
The question — for nations and for each of us individually — is the same one I ask myself every day before opening my data science coursework:
